人生は恐れを知らぬ冒険か無か

ヘレン・ケラー（１８８０〜１９６８）は米国アラバマ州の裕福な家庭に生まれた。生後１９カ月で熱病にかかり視力と聴力を失う。８７年、アン・サリバンが家庭教師につき人生が変わる。庭の井戸から流れる水に手をあてて、ものに名前があることを初めて理解した話は有名だ。
表題のことばは１９４０年の著書「Ｌｅｔ Ｕｓ Ｈａｖｅ Ｆａｉｔｈ」から。「安全は多くの場合迷信で、自然には存在しない。長い目で見れば危険を回避することが危険に身をさらすことよりも安全とはいえない」という教訓に続いて、「人生は恐れを知らぬ冒険か無か。変化に顔（目）を向けること、あるがままの運命のなかで自由な精神をもって行動することが打ち負かされない力を生む」と書いた。

Security is mostly a superstition.

nor do the children of men as a whole experience it.
Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure.
Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.
To keep our faces toward change and
behave like free spirits
in the presence of fate is strength undefeatable.

we should recall President Lincoln's words at another difficult moment in American history in pursuit of another just cause: "Let us have faith that right makes might; and in that faith let us do our duty as we understand it."
